Saskatchewan REALTOR® Associations Lead the Nation in Amalgamation
Regina, April 18, 2019:
Saskatchewan REALTORS® signed the dotted lines today to make it official – in January 2020 the Association of Saskatchewan REALTORS® (ASR), the Association of Regina REALTORS® (ARR) and Saskatoon Region Association of REALTORS® (SRAR) will amalgamate to form a single REALTOR® association in the province. The three association presidents signed an amalgamation agreement following the ASR Annual General Meeting today in Regina.
On March 19, 2019, REALTORS® from across the province came together and voted over 80% in favour of a single association. The new entity, to be called Saskatchewan REALTORS® Association (SRA) will come into effect on January 1, 2020.
For years, organized real estate has been coming together to improve service offerings and efficiencies for REALTORS® and home buyers and sellers throughout the province. From a one-time high of 11 associations within the province, the current decision will create one single provincial association, in addition to REALTORS® Association of Lloydminster and District, who, while in favour of the amalgamation, will not participate due to their dual-provinciality.
While the concept of single associations has been pursued for several years, including two previous failed attempts in Saskatchewan, the success of the March 19 vote will put Saskatchewan REALTORS® Association under the microscope across North America.
“Real estate associations from across the country, and into the U.S. are coming to us to learn what we’ve done differently to make the vote successful this time around,” says ASR President and Swift Current REALTOR® Teressa Mannle. “Our staff has been engaged in speaking events across the country to share our story, and other association leaders have informed us that we will be watched with interest every step of the way to determine the outcome of this initiative. But we have a solid business plan, and we’re confident that this will be a success story.”
Adds Dave Markus, ARR President and Regina REALTOR®, “We took a win-win approach to determining what needed to change, and what should stay the same. This wasn’t simply about cost cutting – it was about becoming more efficient so we could provide additional services at lower costs to our members.”
That efficiency comes into play by eliminating redundancies, such as executive management and governance structures. From a national perspective, Saskatchewan has a relatively small membership of close to 1,600 REALTORS®. As technology becomes more prevalent in our industry, so does the capacity to provide virtual tools remotely. Accessibility in no longer an issue in providing services province-wide. The benefits of combining resources will allow a single association to remain innovative and competitive and help prepare it for future success. The associations already work closely together with several combined resources. Further consolidation will only enhance opportunity and cost-savings.
“We’re very excited about this journey,” says Gary Busch, SRAR President and Saskatoon REALTOR®. “There is a lot of work ahead, and a short window of time to complete it, but we’ve got a great team here, and we know this is the right decision – for the associations, our members and the residents of Saskatchewan.”
